AMISH STRONG
MARISA MEYER
Chapter 1
Spring had awakened in the small Amish town, Mount Joy, birds were singing their spring interlude and blossoms covered the trees like frosting on a cake and the slight breeze carried its flowery sent through the village. But in the Fisherâs home, it was the complete opposite. Rose Beilerâs cousin Claire had gone into labour in the early hours of the morning and complications had set in. Somehow they had missed the fact she was pregnant with twins. One miracle baby had already been born and Rose was standing with the bundle in her arms while she looked on as the midwife tried her utmost to deliver the second one. Claire was in tremendous pain and agony and she had no more strength left to push.
âWe need to get the Englisch doctor,â Gretchen, the midwife said. Her voice desperate as she rubbed Claireâs back where she lay on her side.
âAnd what would he do?â Roseâs father muttered, standing with his straw hat in his hand.
Abraham Beiler had promised his sister on her death bed that he would protect Claire as if she was his own daughter, and with David, Claireâs husband, having gone out of town, this was exactly what he was doing.
âThe baby is not coming down, and itâs in distress. He could do more than I can.â
Rose watched her father tentatively. He was still very much old school, hated anything that represented the modern world and society. She could understand how he felt about cellular phones opening doors for evil to enter, but this was a matter of life and death. She adjusted the little babyâs blanket and handed the child to the midwife.
âDaed, we cannot delay, if we donât call the Englisch doctor, Claire and the baby will die,â she pleaded with her father. Her father studied her and a deep frown furrowed between his brows, the gentle touch of her hand on his arm brought his eyes to hers, âPlease, we cannot lose Claire,â she breathed.
âFine!â he said frustrated, but his eyes were filled with concern.
Abraham was a muscular and tall man, people called him the Giant in jest because of his size, and although he may often come across as an intimidating individual, he had a soft heart. She knew that if he lost Claire because of his own stubbornness, he would never forgive himself, but sometimes he needed convincing.
Rose turned to her fiancé, Kemp, and nodded, âGo and hurry, Claire needs medical help urgently.â
Kemp had been Roseâs pillar of strength and from the age of sixteen it was a given that they would someday marry. Itâs been almost three years since he first made his intentions known and although their courtship had lasted a lot longer than most, she felt at ease and unburdened. She loved Kemp; he was a kind, generous and handsome man. Never had a harsh word to say and hardly ever got into any confrontations. Kemp also never said no whenever someone needed a helping hand. He was almost too good to be true.
